2022 Winter Olympics

A design system proposal for 2022 Olympic games for Glasgow, Scotland.

The Scottish Highland Games were said to have inspired Pierre de Coubertin to revive the Olympics, originally a Greek invention, over a century ago. This brings together that original inspiration with the modern day games to create a design system for the Olympics in Scotland.

The Olympics are a global spectacle, and the host city is tasked with not only providing a place for the worlds greatest athletes to compete, but also representing their country and proudly displaying it for the world. Putting the focus on this nationalistic aspect in the design, it was important to represent Scottish culture, not just Glasgow culture. The logo concept came from stones stacked upon each other because there are many stone walls and structures throughout the country dating back several thousand years. This sturdiness and strength represents both the Olympic spirit as well as that of the Scottish people.

The Highland Games, an athletic competition of feats of skill and strength, date back to before recorded history. Clans from all over Scotland would travel to an agreed upon location and compete against each other for honor and glory. To highlight the connection with the Olympics, “Where the Highland Games meet the Olympic Games” is the slogan. All of the photos feature athletes in traditional Scottish garb participating in one of the events from the Highland Games.
